Carnival is known as the “Fun Ship” line, famous for its unpretentious, party-hard atmosphere. Virgin Voyages entered the scene promising to shake things up. Both lines promise a good time, but they deliver it in very different packages.
The Vibe Check
Carnival is loud, colorful, and energetic. It’s the “Spring Break” of cruise lines, regardless of the season. There are hairy chest contests by the pool, relentless announcements, and a very casual dress code.
Virgin Voyages is “Adult Luxury.” It’s still a party, but it’s a cool party. Think DJ sets at sunset rather than conga lines. The ship is quieter during the day (people are recovering or doing yoga) and comes alive at night with Scarlet Night and club events.
Food Fight: Burgers vs. Fine Dining
Carnival is famous for Guy Fieri’s Burger Joint (which is delicious) and its melting chocolate cake. The food is comfort-focused, plentiful, and generally “good for the price.”
Virgin Voyages is on another planet culinarily. They hired Michelin-starred chefs to design their menus. You can get incredible Mexican, Italian, Korean BBQ, and vegetarian cuisine that rivals land-based restaurants. And again, no specialty dining fees.
Cabin Quality
Carnival cabins are functional. They are places to sleep and shower. The decor is often a bit dated or overly bright.
Virgin cabins are high-tech sanctuaries. The “seabed” transforms from a sofa to a bed, allowing you to host friends in your room during the day. The mood lighting is controlled by an iPad, and the rain showers are a nice touch.
The Crowd
Carnival attracts everyone: families on a budget, bachelor parties, retirees, and first-time cruisers. It is a melting pot.
Virgin attracts a slightly older (25-60), more affluent crowd who want to party without the chaos of budget travel. It is very LGBTQ+ friendly and inclusive.
Our Recommendation
If you are on a strict budget and just want to drink beer by a pool and laugh, Carnival is unbeatable value.
If you want a premium experience where the food is an event, the design is beautiful, and you don’t have to dodge children in the hallway, Virgin Voyages is worth the upgrade.
